Abubakar Khan

Abubakar Khan, Actor and Podcast Host  

Abubakar Khan is a young American, Canadian, Pakistani muslim. He is the founder of The Chosen Khan. An online platform that highlights diversity, interfaith and creative dialogue. He is the chairman of Social Sport, a charity that helps to integrate refugee youth through the power of team sports. He is also a member of Vancouver Helping Hands, a group that helps members of the DTES by providing them with care packages and conversations. He has planned multiple rallies such as the Love Over Fear Rally against Islamophobia and the Love Over Fear Rally against Racial Discrimination, which in turn led him to co- founding the Love Over Fear clothing line. Currently he is producing two films and acting full time. He hopes to connect as many people as possible during the short time that he’s blessed to be on this planet.

Babita Gill – Occupational Therapist

Babita is a Registered Occupational Therapist with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia. She has a bachelors degree in Human Kinetics and a Masters of Occupational Therapy both from the University of British Columbia. After working in community practice for 3 and a half years, Babita has recently opened her own practice, BG Rehab Group. She works with individuals that have been involved in a motor vehicle accident. She provides case management and direct intervention to individuals with orthopaedic injuries, soft tissue injuries, acquired brain injury and psychosocial health concerns. In her spare time she enjoys watching and playing sports.

Bal Brach

Bal Brach, Journalist

Bal Brach is an award-winning television journalist with more than a decade of experience working in newsrooms across Canada.  She has been a producer and reporter for all three of the country’s major news networks — CTV, Global and CBC News. In 2016, Bal was awarded the highest honour in B.C. journalism — a Jack Webster award for her stories about Syrian refugees.

She is also the recipient of regional and national Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards. Bal’s digital storytelling skills have been recognized by the Alberta Media Production Industries Association (AMPIA) and the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. In 2017, Bal was a finalist for a Canadian Screen Award — celebrating excellence in film, television and digital media.

Recently, Bal added documentary filmmaker to her resume. She founded Wrise Productions Inc. in 2015. She directed and produced a documentary about the growth of the Indian wedding industry in Canada. The film “Little India Big Business” aired on CBC television. The film also screened at more than a dozen international film festivals. In 2017, “Little India Big Business” was a finalist in the prestigious New York Festivals as one of the world’s best cultural documentaries.

In 2018, Bal produced SOLD!, an original CBC podcast about the role of foreign investment in B.C.’s real estate market. The podcast reached the top of the iTunes Canada chart, debuting at number one in the first week of launching. In addition to her film, television and radio experience, Bal has also worked on special projects at CBC News. She has developed and launched social media strategies for CBC’s news division in B.C. and Alberta.

Starting at a young age, Gopal Jaswal always had a desire to help others, and to give back. During his university studies in bio chemistry, he wanted a career that challenged him both mentally and physically. Being a Firefighter definately provided an experience like no other. Gopal being dedicated and courageous faced many situations in his daily work life which others may not experience. After volunteering many hours of community service, Gopal is a prime example of someone who is dedicated to our community.

 

Harbir Sian

Dr. Harbir Sian, Optometrist + Founder of Kingsley Eyewear

Born in London and raised in Vancouver, Dr. Harbir Sian attended Simon Fraser University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. He then moved to Boston, Massachusetts to complete his Doctor of Optometry degree from The New England College of Optometry.

Harbir is the co-owner of two optometry clinics (Highstreet Eyecare in Abbotsford and Clarity Eyecare in Surrey) and, more recently, he launched his own eyewear brand called Kingsley Eyewear, which has a focus on social responsibility. Harbir’s passion for his profession has lead him to write blogs, make YouTube videos, and spend time volunteering in various vision clinics in North and South America. He was named Young Optometrist of the Year in 2016 by the BC Doctors of Optometry.

Hardeep Sahota, Constable Vancouver Police Department

Constable Hardeep Sahota has been working with the Vancouver Police Department for 9 years.  Currently, she works in the operational patrol section by responding to various 911 calls. She has a passion to enforce the law, protect the public and prevent crime. Her most notable achievement is co-founding the VPD MESH program which is geared at keeping youth on the path to success by getting them involved in sports. She has received praise for being a mentor to the youth through coaching and motivating to achieve their goals. Additionally, this program has been successfully operating for 6 years now and was created to give back to the community that she grew up in. Before her success as an officer, Hardeep attended Douglas College where she earned a diploma in Criminology and she captained the women’s basketball team. In her free time, she can be found shooting hoops, traveling around the world or spending time with her family and friends.

Harinder Takhar, Pharmacy Technician Supervisor

Harinder Takhar completed her Pharmacy Technician in 1987.  She worked at St. Paul’s as a Pharmacy Technician for 2 years, and then moved to Royal Columbian Hospital as Pharmacy Technician in Jan 1990 to Dec 2005. In Jan 2006 she took on the role as a Pharmacy Technician Supervisor role which changed to Pharmacy Assistant Supervisor in 2011. Harpreet Pandher joined the Hockey Night in Canada in Punjabi team in the 2014 season as an analyst. Like many Canadians born and raised in Canada, Harpreet grew up watching Hockey Night in Canada and becoming a passionate hockey fan. Harpreet has been active in the Greater Vancouver ball hockey scene, playing in Premier Division in BC and playing at the National Level in Canada. His deep passion for hockey is only matched with his deep affection for the Punjabi language and culture. Harpreet grew up watching Kabaddi and also played two seasons for New Westminster Kabaddi Club. Misha was born in Amritsar, India. Due to the nature of her father’s occupation (Indian Army Officer), Misha got to experience the various cultures and fashions of 29 different states in India, hence developing interest in fashion, colors, art and traditions that came with each culture. Misha moved to Vancouver, Canada with her family in 2004.  After obtaining a dual degree in Marketing and International Business from Beedie School of Business, Misha also obtained a post graduate diploma from UBC in Digital Communication and Content. Parveen Bains – Interior Designer, Owner and Principal at Kenzi Design House Inc.

Parveen is a creative who designs unique interiors, which leave a lasting impression.  She founded Vancouver-based design firm Kenzi Design House Inc. in 2005 and has designed a multitude of residential and commercial projects.  

Prior to finding her passion for Interior Design, Parveen studied corporate finance at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), following high school graduation. Working at an accounting firm, she felt unfulfilled and couldn’t imagine this type of profession for her future.  She took a year off, and really focused on what it was that would feed her creativity. “I was always drawn to composition of objects, from an early age and art classes were my favourite. Raveena is a self-taught baker and cake designer turned pastry chef. Raveena found her passion at the ripe age of 16, when she was creating cakes for friends and families, even creating some of her high school projects in cake form. Thus, Just Cakes was officially born in 2010. Over the years, the small, home-based business has grown popularity and presence in the local community and amongst social media, allowing Raveena to pay for post-secondary education all the while. After receiving her BA degree at the University of British Columbia, Raveena travelled to Paris, France to learn from the best French chefs about the art of pastry. Returning in 2016, Raveena began to plan what we know now as Just Cakes Bakeshop. With the bakery doors opening in July 2017, Raveena’s passion is ignited afresh daily, and she continues to fruitfully enjoy the reactions and positive feedback the Bakeshop has since received. Dr. Roop Dhesi is an evidence-based chiropractic doctor, health advisor, college instructor and wellness blogger and speaker.

Born and raised in Abbotsford, B.C. she carved her own path as a trailblazer being the first to graduate from university in her family from the University of the Fraser Valley with a Bachelors of Kinesiology and later graduated from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (Toronto) in 2010. She followed her passion to help people with injuries, performance, injury prevention and wellness care in the Fraser Valley with her skills, education and talent, with a special interest in long distance and endurance sports and pregnancy. Her love for education enrolled her in further studies while she maintained her clinical practice studying pediatric and pregnancy care. Dr. Dhesi has a deep love for wellness inspired living that has led her to study all over the world learning from mindful and wellness practitioners in China, Indonesia, Pacific Islands, United States, and India. She was featured in an International wedding documentary, Little India Big Business for her inspired mindful and wellness approach. Dr. Dhesi believes that her success is because of her determination of self growth through reading and education and surrounding herself with healthy and loving relationships and most of all having confident mentors who guided her. Rupi Kainth worked over 10 years in marketing and design for municipal government, while starting her entrepreneurial journey at the age of 25 by starting Studio Orange Photography.  Currently, she is a single-mom, who continues her projects with her company Karisma Home Design, and Studio Orange. She is also the co-founder of Photographers Academy, where she teaches students photography.

Sabina Sodhi

Sabina Sodhi – Social Worker + Yoga Teacher + Patient Care Quality Officer, Fraser Health

Sabina is a Registered Social Worker with the British Columbia College of Social Workers and a member with the British Columbia Association of Social Workers. She received her Bachelor of Social in 2002 from the University of Victoria and her Master of Social Work in 2008 from the University of British Columbia.  Sabina has worked in the UK in the area of Child Protection and in BC with the Ministry of Children and Family Development. She has spent the last 10 years working for Fraser Health in many different capacities. Her current role is with the Patient Care Quality Office in which she assists patients and families with a thorough review of their concerns about care and treatment. Sabina also has a private practice of her own which she runs in the evenings and weekends. Sabina is also a Registered Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance International. She believes in holistic wellness and the embodied experience of counselling and yoga as a way of linking mind and body to support moving through difficult challenges. Sabina practices trauma sensitive yoga as a mode of recovery and coping.

Sara Zaytsoff

Sara Zaytsoff, Kinesiologist + Owner Mint Club Athletics  

Sara is a Registered Kinesiologist/ Exercise Physiologist. She obtained her undergraduate degree from UBC Okanagan where she specialized in neurorehabilitation and sport performance. During this time she also competed with the varsity women’s volleyball team and won 3 national, and 3 provincial medals, including 2 back to back undefeated seasons. When Sara wasn’t playing sports, attending classes, or working out, she was at the schools gym, working as gym staff. She helped run multiple volleyball camps, and sport performance camps for children and youth in the Okanagan. Upon returning home from the Okanagan, Sara felt a desire and passion for developing the next generation of youth females and youth female athletes. Thus, Mint Club Athletics was born. Since 2012, Sara has been working hard in the community to develop a program that was accessible, well rounded, and truly unique. In addition to her after school programs, she works in the local clubs, sports academies, and with the Surrey school district.

Sonia Kang, Realtor

Aside from accomplishing a career in nursing, being a mom has been one of Sonia Kang’s biggest and greatest achievements in her life. Now that her little family is complete, She wanted to get back into the workforce with some flexibility in her schedule. So she shifted her focus from nursing onto Fraser Valley’s real estate market. She is now an agent for Sutton Group West Coast Realty. This journey so far has been filled with fear, excitement, meeting amazing new people and rewarding challenges.

Sukhi Ghuman, Marketing + Events Manager, Lifestyle Photographer, BYOBF Network Co-Founder

Sukhi Ghuman is a community builder, connector, digital marketing consultant and lifestyle photographer. She has spent over 10 years working in various sectors of the entertainment industry, as a producer, writer, television host and reporter for Shaw Multicultural Channel and Shaw TV. Currently, Sukhi freelances as a Digital Marketing Strategist, with an emphasis on branding and social media. Sukhi is also a lifestyle photographer and works as a Marketing and Events Manager with the University of British Columbia. Sukhi also co-founded the Be Your Own Best Friend (BYOBF) Network in 2006, a networking group dedicated to empowering young girls and women, and she was a board of Director with the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration (VIBC) Society for 12 years. Currently, Sukhi is a Board of Director with the Roundhouse Community Art and Culture Centre.

Sukhpreet Singh Heir, Canadian Border Services Officer 

I am a husband and a proud daddy of three little boys all currently 5 and under. Before becoming a Border Services Officer, I completed my studies as a Youth Justice Worker and worked as a Youth Worker in the community. At the age of 17 I became probably the youngest person to serve on a Gurdwara committee. After four years as Secretary of a local Gurdwara I served on the Board of Directors of the Surrey Food Bank, following that I volunteered in an advisory role for two local Gurdwaras advocating for increased programming for youth. I also Produced/Hosted Ik Onkar TV for several years, a local variety television show showcasing youth and role models in our community that are doing great things! I am now in my 10thyear of service with the Canada Border Services Agency in the Pacific Highway District. I’ve spent most of my time at the Peace Arch Border Crossing which is the second busiest land border crossing in all of Canada however I’ve also spent time at various other Port of Entries in the district including Commercial Operations. I am currently an Executive Steward in our local for the Customs & Immigration Union. Workplace activism is important to me tackling issues of inclusion, diversity, safety, and mental health in the workplace. I serve as a member of the CBSA’s National LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee where we focus on important initiatives & policies related to the LBGTQ+ community in our agency. I am proud to be a LGBTQ+ ally and advocate for progressive policies on inclusion and equality. I am an active member of the Pacific Region CBSA ceremonial unit, representing the agency at events and memorials in the community.

Susan Justice

Susan Justice, Lawyer

Susan is a family law lawyer, and practices primarily in the area of divorce she deals with child custody, adoption and property division. Susan is with YLaw Group, having two locations, in Vancouver and South Surrey. 

This lawyer has an abundance of achievements behind her, all of which show how well she can work under pressure. Susan mastered the violin with the assistance of teachers in Canada and as well as in London, UK. She is an active professional choreographer and dancer, having won various awards through dance competitions, workshops and camps. Susan is also a natural problem-solver, since a young age, she has been exceptionally talented at solving difficult equations, winning countless math competitions and awards.
Susan is heavily involved with the South Asian and legal community while being part of various legal associations, Susan is a key member of the British Columbia Committee for the Sikh Research Institute. A thought leader in family law, Susan is featured on a weekly television shows every Saturday on Joy TV, namely, Dil Diyan Gallan and Jaagriti, providing legal tips and guidance to the South Asian community. Susan is a devoted blogger and has also been featured on a radio call-in show, RED FM, allowing listeners to ask questions regarding family law. Susan is very active in her community, supporting many organizations such as Sikh Research Institute, Punjab Digital Library and Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen (for the homeless).  

Taran Cheema

Taran Cheema, Fashion Designer, TKC Designs 

Taranjit (Taran) Cheema is a Canadian-born designer who has a strong eye for colors and graphics. She explores mix media and always strives to create unique and inspirational pieces. In addition to fashion, she also enjoys exploring other passions such as photography and fine arts.

Originally, she pursued her love for fine arts, which naturally progressed into an interest in fashion design. In 2009, she got accepted into Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

Taran Cheema recently graduated from Parsons with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. In May 2013, she exhibited her thesis collection at the Parsons 560 Exhibition and the Parsons Benefit Gala. Within her graduating class in the fashion program, she was recognized as being among the students who received a high score on her thesis collection. Her Thesis collection was also sought out by Lady Gaga’s stylist , Brandon Maxwell. Taran now resides in Vancouver, BC where she has launched her colorful label TKC Design Inc.

Taran Mullhi is the owner & designer of Vancouver based fashion brand Mahari Collection. Her early interest in creative arts led to studying textiles throughout high school & eventually securing a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Management. Since moving to Vancouver in 2012 Taran established Mahari Collection with designs focusing on merging her British & Indian heritage to create contemporary wear pieces.

With over 15 years of experience in performing arts, broadcasting, and community involvement Tarannum is one of Vancouver’s most recognized media personalities in the South Asian community.  As a young child growing up in a family of theater actors, performing arts came naturally to Tarannum. She would set up her tape recorder and interview her family and friends as a reporter on the news. At five years old, Tarannum entered the world of entertainment with her first stage performance and never looked back. 

Tarannum has not only made a mark as a host of her own television show & radio broadcaster but as the face of the South Asian community has been invited to emcee hundreds of high profile community events.Tarannum is currently a reporter with OMNI News and can be seen interviewing local, national and international celebrities, providing up to date news on the latest bollywood news @ 9-10 pm, channel 8.

Vijay Vaibhav Saini, Radio Broadcaster, Voice Over Artist, Translator, Copywriter

Vijay is a broadcaster actively working in South Asian media for over 16 years. Having worked in various capacities in the radio industry, Vijay has been able to put his talents to use as a Creative Copywriter, an Entertainment Host, a Political News Talk Host and a Program Director. In his career so far, Vijay has interviewed, among others, Bollywood superstars like Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan, and Canadian political personalities like current federal ministers Harjit Sajjan, Navdeep Bains, former Federal NDP leader Tom Mulcair and former BC Premier Christy Clark. Vijay’s passion for performing arts has also earned him opportunities to act in Punjabi movies and he has numerous voiceovers to his credit. In his spare time Vijay likes to read and write poetry, and engage in outdoor activities.
