Meet sisters Nina Johal and Sharon Grewal. These mompreneurs established their online boutique jewelry company to fulfill their passion for Indian fashion jewelry and the impact it can make in creating the perfect look. These sisters love to offer designs and styles to suit everyone’s personality and create a look unique and true to them. Indian jewelry comes in a wide array of styles and designs from traditional to modern and they carry them all. The women enjoy working hands on with their customers by pairing pieces specific to their needs and outfits.

Tell us about the path you took to get to where you are today. What advice would you give young South Asian women wanting to do what you do?

Where there’s a passion there needs to be a will. In the midst of family milestones such as one of us having a newborn and the other pregnant with a second, we certainly had our handsful but were dedicated. We had a strong desire to start up our own business from the ground up and we love Indian Jewelry so we wanted to put the two together.

We first did our research. Getting an understanding of the current markets, trends and pricing was the start to building a foundation for Luxury Indian Jewels. We vetted out and sought vendors based on a high standard for quality. It was important for us to offer quality jewelry at reasonable prices. We wanted to be prepared and once ready, we placed our first order and launched in April 2017 on Instagram. We were fortunate to have a great support system to help us along the way and spread the word. We have since launched a website www.luxuryindianjewels.com to optimize the shopping experience for our customers.

We would advise South Asian women to overcome any hesitation or fears they may have when jumping into a venture such as an online business. Also, be diligent and proactive. Being risk averse can hinder success and the only way of knowing whether you will be successful is to just go for it! Furthermore, we advise to seek out a support system to help provide the encouragement and feedback that is needed in the beginning and along the way. Also, be patient and accept failure or losses; success doesn’t happen overnight. It is important to celebrate successes and to also improve and learn from mistakes.

How important is it to you to make South Asian women feel empowered?

It is very important for us to empower South Asian women. We believe as South Asian women, we are entitled and capable of doing whatever we are passionate about. It’s important to us to support one another and encourage South Asian women to step out of the traditional roles. We strive to empower South Asian women to do whatever they set their minds to. We hope reading this spotlight will help motivate South Asian women that you can make a passion a reality. We hope for the young generation to continue the movement.

What is your personal motto or mission statement?

During the process of establishing Luxury Indian Jewels; we came across this quote from Elizabeth Taylor and felt it was fitting; it resonated with our passion and was our driving motto.

“Jewelry has the power to be the one little thing that makes you feel unique”

Besides your work, what are you passionate about?

Sharon: I am passionate about being a loving mom and wife as well as keeping up with health and fitness. I enjoy healthy cooking and group fitness such as Zumba.

Nina: I am passionate about my family and spending time with them. I also love to bake! Baking is calming and I also enjoy involving my daughter in the fun.

Where can one find you on her days off?

When we have time off you will most likely find us spending time with our family either at home or on outings. Evenings are spent sometimes catching up on tv shows/movies or working out.

How do you balance work, life, family?

It is challenging, but we strive to have a harmony between work and family. We found the best way to balance the two is to make time and a clear distinction between the two. We try to make a conscious effort to separate work from family time. When it’s family time, we do not answer calls or emails, and give all our attention to the family during this time.  Another clear distinction we try to make is ‘me’ time. Finding something for ourselves as a way to unwind and recharge such as a girls night out once a month, or a zumba class!
