Meet Kirn Gill, a talented artist. Kirn Gill paints landscapes and floral paintings mostly in acrylic paint. Her work can be found at a number of shops in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. She also creates custom paintings for her clients.
Tell us about the path you took to get to where you are today.What advice would you give young South Asian women wanting to do what you do?
I spent many years doing everything else but following my passion. I got my BA in History, became a Life Coach, worked as an Education Assistant in the school system, taught Vision Board workshops and wrote some poetry. Art was always there in my Life. My husband is also an artist and I supported him during many of his artistic endeavours. I would paint 2-3 paintings a year and give them away as gifts.
After having my son something amazing opened up for me. I needed something of my own. I had a lot of creative energy and I just started painting and sharing it on social media. I had such a great response and started selling pieces right away. The orders for work started coming in and things took off. I started to refine my skill and focused on Landscapes and found markets that my paintings do very well in!
My advice to a South Asian Woman that wants to do what I do is:
Become an expert in your field. Learn the ins and outs of the industry. Get super good at your craft where the work begins to speak for itself. Keep learning and take classes. Put yourself our there and share your work with the world. Learn about hashtags, talk to gallery owners, and business owners. Learn about transporting, and packaging art. It’s an entire world that you have to immerse yourself in and when it’s your passion it’s an absolute delight. Believe it’s a possibility!
How important is it to you to make South Asian women feel empowered?
I’m always encouraging the women in my life to follow their passions. I am also a member of Thrive Artists and it’s a mastermind group of women Artists supporting each other. It is inspiring being around women that feel that they are living their best lives. I have coached many women business owners. I have led Vision Board workshops to help women get focused on all that they want to achieve in their Life! I truly believe the number one thing we can do for other women is believe in them, encourage them, help them see that their dreams are a possibility and then hold them accountable.
What is your personal motto or mission statement?
No one else is going to make your dreams come true. Do it for yourself. Keep moving in the direction of your goals keep believing in yourself! Take Action.
Besides your work, what are you passionate about?
Independent Coffee shops, music, books, my children, flowers shops. Also, the concept of beauty and creativity….bringing more of it into my life!
Where can one find you on her days off?
Spending time with my family, at the beach or a local coffee shop in Vancouver!
How do you balance work, life, family?
Work life balance is something I am currently working on. I have a 5 year old and a 1 year old so there’s a lot of balancing going on.
Multitasking does not work for me! I am learning to schedule in time for all the things in my day that I need to attend to. Also, asking for help especially when deadlines are coming up is huge for me. I do have a writing practice, and I meditate a few times a week.
